Award winning designer Margrethe Odgaard designs rug for Muuto

The renowned Danish textile and color designer Margarethe Odgaard, with a background in Scandinavian weaving tradition, has created a timeless rug design, which adds a stylish, underplayed elegance to any home. The inspiration came from great Danish weavers, and the intention was to create a functional rug of high quality with a simple, yet animated pattern.

PLY is therefore a rug, which functions as both a neutral base and a sophisticated decoration in any given context. The rug comes in five unique and specially chosen color combinations in three sizes. The finishing tassels in the corners are a testament to the craftsmanship in a rug designed to be passed down in generations.

The Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize 2016 is awarded to the Danish textile designer Margrethe Odgaard.

The Röhsska Museum award committee for the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize has decided to award Margrethe Odgaard this year’s prize of SEK 1 million.

The award committee’s motivation: Margrethe Odgaard uses textiles as her basis for design. By thinking with her hands, her approach is at once artisan, tactile, and well thought through. Using both poetic and consistent colour and pattern studies, Odgaard creates coherence in a breath-taking process that is imbued with musicality. Her artistic vision is propelled by her desire for creation and enrichment in which knowledge, ideas, and skills are shared generously and with perseverance.

“PLY is a simple and elegant rug showcasing the craft of traditional hand weaving. A unique broken twill structure enhances the vibrant and almost three-dimensional zigzag pattern, creating a perfect balance of the calm and the conspicuous. Made from high quality New Zealand wool, and with intriguing tassels as a finishing detail, PLY is a new take on the classic weft faced rug, transporting the roots of our Scandinavian culture into the future.”

Educated from The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Design in 2005 with additional studies at Rhode Island School of Design in the US, Margrethe Odgaard’s focus as a textile designer is on colors, patterns, and tactility. What drives her work is a constant search for fresh ways of exploiting color and pattern in the material. PLY is her first product made for MUUTO.
