Interview with Taina Kivioja
Hi, after some hiatus we continue our tradition of publishing interviews with talented Nordic designers. This time Taina Kiviola is our guest, and she was so friendly to answer to the few our questions:
NDB: Hi Taina, can you tell us about your design projects and the creative process behind them?
TK: I have done interesting projects example to Iittala, Marimekko, Ikea. These have been design projects, where I had possibility to offer own designs to their collection. In my experience there is a big leap to take until you have your design in production. These days I´m working closely with different product development projects and to have a design in production is a valid topic in every case.
There is no magic in design process. I see possibilities everywhere but mostly I like to design something meaningful, simple and timeless.
NDB: Where do you get your inspiration from?
TK: I get my inspiration from differences, contrasts. My former professor said, that Why to draw red house with potato field, everybody knows how it looks. Try to approach the subject from different point of view and show that to others. Give something new, your persona.
NDB: Tell us about your favourite work you have done?
TK: I was a head designer in a project where we developed a portable “sodastream”. This was a handbag size, yet powerful. GoFizzy water carbonator represents Scandinavian values, clean lines, easy to use and smart function.
This project was fascinating, because we were developing whole new product, really need to thing out of the box. And most of all the team was spot on.
NDB: This is a popular question that we ask our favourites. What the top three songs are currently on your playlist?
Apashe Battle Royal
Don Diablo People Say
I love EDM 😊
NDB: Can you point to three Scandinavian Architects/Designers which creations you love?
Harri Koskinen – He really understands what the meaning of Scandinavian design and functionality is
Tapio Wirkkala – old master who were very versatile and bold designer
Hans J. Wegner – He gets the best out of the wood material
NDB: Finally Taina, any words of wisdom for our Nordic Design Blog readers?
NDB: Thank you Taina, and we wish you inspiration in your creative work!
