To clean a dehumidifier filter safely, unplug the unit, remove the filter, vacuum off loose dust, and wash it only if the manual says it is washable. Let it dry completely before you put it back.
Check the filter type first. Mesh pre-filters are often washable, but HEPA, carbon and specialty filters are often replace-only. If you are not sure how often to do this, see how often to clean a dehumidifier filter.
Quick Answer
- Turn off and unplug the dehumidifier.
- Remove the filter as shown in the owner’s manual.
- Vacuum or brush off loose dust and lint.
- If washable, rinse in warm (not hot) water, with mild dish soap only if the manual allows.
- Air-dry it completely, reinstall it the right way around, and reset the filter light if your model has one.

Why a Clean Dehumidifier Filter Matters

A clean filter helps air move through the dehumidifier as designed. When lint and dust cover it, airflow can drop, moisture removal can weaken, and the unit may run longer. For the effects, see what happens when a dehumidifier filter is dirty.
Most portable units use a basic dust filter, not a high-efficiency air-purifier filter. It catches larger debris before it reaches the coils, but do not assume it removes fine allergens or smoke unless the manufacturer gives a tested filtration rating.
Filter cleaning also does not fix leaks, standing water or existing mold. The EPA recommends correcting moisture sources and keeping indoor relative humidity below 60%, ideally between 30% and 50%.
Identify the Filter Type Before Cleaning
Do not put a filter under water until you know what it is. Check the model number and read the filter section of the manual.
| Filter type | Cleaning approach |
|---|---|
| Washable mesh pre-filter | Often safe to vacuum and rinse; follow the manual’s water and detergent instructions |
| Replaceable dust or antimicrobial filter | May have a limited service life even if it looks clean |
| HEPA or high-efficiency filter | Often not washable; water can damage the media |
| Activated carbon filter | Usually replaced, not washed; rinsing does not restore its odor-adsorbing capacity |
Safety warning: Never wash a filter unless the manual says it is washable. Do not spray water into the appliance, immerse the unit, or clean internal electrical parts.
How to Clean a Dehumidifier Filter Safely, Step by Step
Step 1: Unplug the dehumidifier
Turn the unit off, then pull the plug from the wall. Turning off the control panel is not the same as disconnecting power. Grip the plug body rather than yanking the cord, and keep the plug dry.
If the cord, plug or outlet looks burned, loose, cracked or wet, stop and get qualified service instead of continuing.
Step 2: Find the filter access
The filter may slide out from the back, side, front grille or behind the water bucket. Many portable units put it behind the rear air-intake grille, with a pull tab, latch or frame. Some models need the bucket removed first, and on some newer models the filter comes off attached to the rear grille. Our guide on where the dehumidifier filter is located covers common layouts.
The manual should say whether the filter slides up, down or straight out, whether it is washable, and whether a reminder light needs resetting. Do not pry panels with a screwdriver unless the manual says to. If a panel will not open, look for a hidden latch, screw or bucket interlock.
Step 3: Remove the filter
Grip it by the frame, pull tab or handle and slide it out in the direction the manual shows. Note its orientation or take a quick photo. Then inspect the frame and mesh for tears, cracks, warping, heavy staining or odor.
Step 4: Remove loose dust
For a lightly dirty filter, dry cleaning may be enough. Use a soft brush or a vacuum with a brush attachment at low suction, and support the frame so it does not flex. Vacuuming first also keeps lint clumps out of the sink.
Step 5: Wash it, only if washable
Rinse the filter with clean, warm water. GE Appliances’ dehumidifier instructions say to wash a dirty filter in warm, soapy water that is not hot, rinse it well, and avoid chemical cleaners. Never use the dishwasher.
Hold it by the frame and let water flow through the mesh. Do not use bleach, solvents, abrasive cleaners, a pressure washer or a stiff brush. If the filter still looks blocked after gentle cleaning, or oily residue will not rinse away, replace it instead of scrubbing harder.
Step 6: Dry it completely
Shake off loose droplets and let the filter air-dry upright or flat in a shaded, ventilated spot until the frame, corners and mesh are fully dry. Drying time varies, and high room humidity can slow it, so there is no fixed number to rely on.
- Do not use a hair dryer, oven or heater.
- Do not wring or twist the filter.
- Check both sides and the frame for damp spots before reinstalling.
- Keep the dehumidifier off until the filter is dry, or use a spare if you have one.
Step 7: Reinstall the filter
Put the dry filter back in the same orientation. Align the rails, tabs or frame edges and slide it in without forcing it, then refit the grille or cover and the bucket. GE’s guidance says never to operate the unit without the filter installed.
Check for gaps or a bowed frame. A filter that is upside down, off its rails or not fully seated can rub the fan, let debris bypass it, or stop the panel from closing.
Step 8: Reset the reminder and test
Some units use a runtime-based reminder, so cleaning may not turn the light off by itself. GE, for example, says certain models show a clean-filter light after 250 hours and need the filter button held for 3 seconds after cleaning. Check your manual for your model’s reset.
- Plug the unit into a dry outlet.
- Reset the filter reminder if your manual requires it.
- Run it for several minutes.
- Listen for rubbing, rattling or unusual airflow noise.
- Confirm air is moving normally through the outlet.
Check for Extra Filters and Blockages
Some dehumidifier and air-purifier combinations have more than one filter, such as a washable pre-filter in front of a replaceable HEPA or carbon filter. Clean or replace each layer by its own instructions.
- Check the intake grille for lint and pet hair.
- Check the outlet grille for blocked airflow.
- Vacuum accessible grille surfaces with the unit unplugged.
- Do not open sealed panels or reach toward coils, fan blades, wiring or refrigerant parts.
If airflow stays weak after the filter and grilles are clean, the evaporator coil may be dirty or frosted. See how to clean dehumidifier coils, or arrange service rather than dismantling the unit.

When to Replace the Filter
Replace it when the manual gives a replacement interval, or when it is torn, cracked, warped, shedding material, permanently clogged or no longer fits securely. A musty odor or visible growth that remains after approved cleaning is another reason to stop using it and check the appliance, bucket and drain hose. Our guide on how to clean mold from a dehumidifier covers that case.
Use the model number to order the manufacturer-approved replacement. Avoid cutting generic filter material to fit unless the manufacturer approves it, because added resistance can restrict airflow.

How Often to Clean a Dehumidifier Filter
Use the interval or reminder in your manual as your main guide. GE’s older-model instructions say to check the filter every 2 to 3 weeks, while its newer models use a 250-hour indicator. Other brands and larger or whole-home units use different intervals.
Check sooner when you see lint covering the mesh, reduced airflow, longer run times, weaker moisture removal, unusual noise, or when dust, pet hair, smoke or renovation work is present. The full breakdown is in our guide on how often to clean a dehumidifier filter.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best way to clean a dehumidifier filter?
Unplug the unit, remove the filter as the manual shows, and vacuum loose debris. If it is washable, rinse it in warm, soapy water, rinse well, and let it dry completely. Reinstall it facing the right way and reset the reminder light if your model has one.
Can every dehumidifier filter be washed?
No. Many mesh pre-filters are washable, but HEPA, carbon, antimicrobial and specialty filters may be replace-only. Check the filter label and the owner’s manual before using water, and replace the filter if you cannot confirm it is washable.
How often does a dehumidifier filter need cleaning?
Follow the manufacturer’s schedule or reminder light. Some models say every few weeks and others use a runtime counter such as 250 hours. Check it more often in dusty rooms, homes with pets, or if you run the unit daily.
Can I run a dehumidifier without the filter?
Not unless the manufacturer says it is allowed. GE, for one, says never to operate its dehumidifier without the filter installed. Without it, lint and dust can collect on internal parts, hurt performance and make later cleaning harder.
Why is the filter light still on after cleaning?
Many filter lights are runtime reminders, not dirt sensors. They stay on until you press or hold the reset control for the time your manual specifies. On some GE models that is 3 seconds, but it varies by brand and model.
How long does a washed dehumidifier filter take to dry?
There is no fixed time. It can take a while, especially in humid weather. Do not reinstall it until the frame, corners and mesh are completely dry, because a damp filter can encourage musty odors and restrict airflow.
